The Steam Machine’s Comeback

What Has Changed?

The new Steam Machine, a small gaming PC running Valve’s Linux-based SteamOS, initially resembles the old one.

However, things are different this time. Over the past ten years, SteamOS has seen significant change.

Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer that enables Windows games to run smoothly on Linux, is the most significant improvement.
Almost all of the Steam collection is now playable on SteamOS, including games that aren’t technically compatible with Linux.
Users of Steam Deck are already aware of how effectively SteamOS functions; games frequently run more smoothly on SteamOS than on Windows 11 devices.

The majority of games run perfectly, but some online multiplayer games, including Battlefield 6 and Destiny 2, still don’t operate due to incompatible anti-cheat software.

Valve had a number of games loaded during my test, ranging from Silent Hill F to Cyberpunk 2077. All of them functioned flawlessly, with the exception of a few slight performance issues in Silent Hill F.

Additionally, Valve has added the Steam Machine to its Steam Deck Verified program. Three verification badges for the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame (Valve’s upcoming VR headgear) will soon be available.

Create and Construct

The Steam Machine features a simple, console-like look despite being a gaming PC.
It has a thin RGB light strip across the front of a tiny black cube. It is about as small as a Nintendo GameCube and about half the size of an Xbox Series X.

Custom designs can be substituted for the magnetic front panel. I even came across a gorgeous model with a hardwood front panel. In order to enable people to make their own panels, Valve intends to distribute 3D printing files.

It features two USB-A ports and a MicroSD slot on the front and HDMI, DisplayPort, two additional USB-A ports, one USB-C port, and the power connector on the back.
The best part is that it doesn’t require a heavy adapter or power brick because it has an internal power supply.

An enormous heatsink and cooling system that pulls air from the front and bottom and vents it out the back was seen when one looked inside.
Valve has cleverly engineered the cooling system with a GPU TDP of 110–130W.

The Steam Machine will have a 512GB or 2TB SSD for storage.
It has an NVMe 2230 disk slot, but it also supports full-size 2280 NVMe drives, which are more affordable and readily available, so users may swap out the storage themselves.

The remaining parts, such as the CPU and RAM, cannot be updated because they are soldered.
Although a little disappointing, Valve made this trade-off to keep the system small and console-like.

RGB Features and the Steam Controller

Both the new Steam Controller and the Steam Machine will be available.
To ensure that you never lose a USB port, each machine will come with an integrated wireless dongle for the controller.
An extra dongle that can be used with other systems or even as a wireless charging dock while you’re not playing will be included with the controller.

Thirteen illumination zones on an RGB light bar at the bottom of the machine serve as a status indicator.
To enable users to alter the lighting effects, Valve is creating new software.

Performance and Specifications

The Steam Machine has a unique AMD-Valve chipset.

GPU: TDP 110–130W, RDNA 3 with 28 Compute Units (about equal to RX 7600 Mobile)

CPU: 6-core Zen 4 with a 30W TDP

Even with ray tracing enabled, the gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077 was remarkably fluid when I played it at 4K Ultra settings with FSR Performance mode.

Silent Hill F, however, has trouble at 4K Ultra, falling to about 15–20 frames per second.
The experience improved significantly after upgrading to 1440p Medium with FSR enabled.

This demonstrates unequivocally that it is still a proper gaming PC, which means you may occasionally need to adjust settings for best results.
Although demanding Unreal Engine 5 games would necessitate concessions, Valve asserts that it can handle all current games at 4K with upscaling.

For whom is it intended?

About 20% of Steam Deck users link their devices to a TV, according to Valve.
The Steam Deck fails to produce 4K images on larger screens, despite performing admirably on its 800p display.
The Steam Machine, a living room gaming PC intended for 4K gaming, fills that need.

Traditional do-it-yourself PC enthusiasts are not the target audience for this system. It is targeted at console players that used the Steam Deck to get into PC gaming.
Expect smoother performance in demanding games because, according to Valve, the Steam Machine is six times more powerful than the Steam Deck.

How Much Will It Cost?

In 2025, it is impossible to discuss PC hardware without bringing up the cost.

Even consoles like the Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X have witnessed price increases, as have new launches like the ROG Ally X and RTX 5080.

Although Valve has not yet disclosed the Steam Machine’s price, the company claims it will be reasonably priced when compared to gaming PCs with comparable specifications.

It could pose a significant threat to Xbox and PlayStation in the living room gaming market if Valve can keep it around $1,000 (about ₹85,000).
