November 4, 2025, Louisville, Kentucky After a UPS MD-11 cargo plane crashed close to Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, panic erupted throughout the region. Following the collision, the plane caught fire, spewing dense, black smoke skyward.

The accident happened close to Fern Valley and Grade Lane, according to early accounts. Several emergency services, including the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), arrived on the site promptly. Although the severity of the injuries is still unknown, police have acknowledged that some persons have been hurt.

A five-mile radius “shelter-in-place” alert has been issued.

As a safety measure, authorities have ordered everyone within a 5-mile radius of the airport to stay inside. Due to the ongoing emergency response, officials also declared that Grade Lane between Stooges and Crittenden has been closed indefinitely.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, a variant primarily intended for cargo transportation, was the aircraft that went down. McDonnell Douglas created it initially, and Boeing eventually purchased it.
Once a common wide-body passenger jet, the MD-11 was converted for cargo duty as fuel prices for three-engine aircraft rose.
Boeing claims that the MD-11 can carry over 38,000 gallons of fuel and take off weighing up to 633,000 pounds.

The incident was initially reported at approximately 5:14 p.m., according to local news sources WAVE and WLKY. Following a thunderous explosion, witnesses reported witnessing enormous flames and debris soaring through the air.

Reports of an explosion along Grade Lane and Fern Valley Road were confirmed by the MetroSafe organization. Currently, emergency personnel are on the site trying to put out the fire and help those impacted.

Authorities said an investigation is in progress, but they have not yet disclosed the crash’s official cause.
