The first elite runners to cross the finish line

Today, the five boroughs of New York City got up early to greet the approximately 55,000 runners taking part in the 54th Annual New York City Marathon.

The mid-to upper-50s (Fahrenheit) in the morning are predicted to be ideal for the race. The 26.2-mile course is lined with spectators who are excited to see the best endurance racers in the world.

A number of well-known elite athletes are fighting for one of the most coveted titles on the international marathon circuit, in addition to hundreds of recreational runners and wheelchair users aiming to finish or set personal bests.

The Race for Men

Eliud Kipchoge, a 40-year-old two-time Olympic marathon champion who is considered a living legend, is finally making his New York debut, and he’s doing it in his own distinctive (and slightly fashionable) manner.

His modified Nike long-sleeve top with air vents, dubbed “fishnet fashion” by some, caught the attention of rivals at the starting line. Kipchoge may not be as untouchable as he once was, but his presence still draws attention, as seen by his hint that he will make a “big announcement” following the race.

Three Kenyans, Benson Kipruto, Albert Korir, and Alexander Mutiso Munyao, are also serious contenders, as is Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands, who hopes to become the first man to defend his title since 2013.

Additionally, watch American Olympians Hillary Bor and Joe Klecker as they run their first marathons.

The Race for Women

Sifan Hassan might be in the spotlight once more in the women’s division. She’s back at the starting line, this time on Staten Island, just nine weeks after winning the Sydney Marathon.

With a brilliant career that includes three World Marathon Major titles and six Olympic gold, Hassan is no stranger to hard training and short turnarounds.

However, this year’s field is very competitive, with three previous New York champions from Kenya: Sheila Chepkirui (2024), Hellen Obiri (2023), and Sharon Lokedi (2022).

Olympians Emily Sisson and Fiona O’Keeffe are two of the leading American candidates.
