Nevertheless, sales of the new iPhone Air don’t appear to be going well thus far.
Because it contains the first official sales figures for the iPhone 17, this earnings report is especially important.
Just over a week’s worth of data for the new iPhone models, which went on sale on September 19, are included in the study, which covers sales through the end of September.
Wall Street has been driving up Apple’s stock in recent weeks because preliminary industry estimates indicate that the iPhone 17 is selling well.
Investors, however, will be keeping a careful eye on Apple’s comments regarding demand in order to ascertain whether this year could develop into a “super-cycle,” or a return to growth following the 2022 peak in iPhone revenue.
Analysts predict that Apple will reach that milestone in fiscal year 2025, according to a FactSet study.
Analysts and industry experts’ third-party estimations also point to an increase in iPhone sales this cycle. This is particularly true with the iPhone 17 Pro, which has a complete aluminum frame and a longer battery life, and the iPhone 17, which has Apple’s fastest chip and a higher refresh rate display.
However, the new iPhone Air hasn’t gained much traction yet.
This month, Wells Fargo analyst Aaron Rakers stated, “Some reports have shown that iPhone 17 Air sales haven’t picked up as quickly as many expected.”
It’s a well-known tale for Apple: the corporation often does best when it releases new iPhone models that broaden its product line.
However, the fourth model has continuously trailed the others in sales since the transition to a four-phone range in 2020.
The larger “Plus” model first took the place of the “Mini” model, and it is currently testing the “Air.”

“This shows that the current Pro and standard models already meet most of the demand from high-end users, leaving little room for new market segments or positioning,” he clarified.
Apple is not too concerned about the sluggish sales of the iPhone Air.
Apple has released four new iPhones every fall since 2020.
However, one of the four tends to perform poorly each year, and Apple continues to experiment with different iterations in an effort to strike the ideal balance.
Prior to the Air, there was the “Plus” model, which cost $899 and was in the middle of the lineup with features comparable to the base iPhone but a bigger screen. From 2022 until 2024, Apple sold the model.
According to Goldman Sachs analysts, delivery lead times—the amount of time Apple estimates it will take to complete an order—indicate that demand for the iPhone Air is comparable to that of earlier versions.
According to Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng, “the iPhone Air’s lead times were initially shorter than the iPhone 16 Plus, but now they’ve surpassed those of the 16 Plus and are just below the 15 Plus.”
The iPhone Mini, which debuted in 2020, was Apple’s fourth model prior to that. Despite being less expensive than the first iPhone, many didn’t like the smaller screen.
An early look at the iPhone Air and the development of foldable iPhones
According to analysts, the iPhone Air might be a precursor to a more varied iPhone portfolio, which could lead to the release of a foldable iPhone in the future.
Tech reviewers say its thin design is similar to the half of a folding phone.
Additionally, the iPhone Air may not receive yearly updates because its name does not contain a number.
Investors presumably won’t mind the Air’s slower performance if Apple’s other iPhone models continue to sell well, especially if its innovative design keeps the lineup feeling fresh.
Ng from Goldman Sachs commented, “We think Apple can maintain the relevance of the iPhone through new form-factor updates.”
For instance, Apple is anticipated to release its first foldable iPhone in 2026 and an all-screen iPhone in 2027, following this year’s smaller iPhone Air design.
